Active adult 55+ communities aren’t much different than any other residential community, aside from their age qualified, but most are designed with a retirement-friendly, low-maintenance lifestyle in mind. There are other types of age-qualified communities for seniors as well, among them continuing care retirement communities [also called CCRCs or life plan communities].

As the Baby Boomers reach retirement age, active adult communities are becoming more and more popular in the U.S. These new retirees don’t see themselves as “old folks,” so the idea of an active 55+ living community that offers—even facilitates—an active lifestyle is appealing to them. Ditching exterior home maintenance chores frees residents of active adult communities to enjoy their retirement years and do more of the things they love.

So why do people choose a 55+ community? The well-designed communities have all of the residents' needs in mind. Homestead Village offers the freedom and independence that focuses on community, and bringing neighbors together and building friendships.

Many of the residents continue to work part or full time, which is why the term “active adult retirement communities” is less accurate. The residents are not opposed to children (or grandchildren!) either. Rather, the 55+ component simply assumes that people at the same stage of life probably share a few leisure-time interests and pursuits. At its most basic level, “active 55+” means independent, so active adult communities offer no assistance with daily living activities, such as meals, medication, housekeeping and personal care. Residents are also choosing a community and a lifestyle. Homestead Village offers residents an affordable and active lifestyle.

Where do I start?

The first thing when looking at Senior Independent Living options is determining what type of community is ideal for you. The different types are skilled nursing, assisted living and age qualified, active, independent living. Here at Homestead Village, we offer the active independent lifestyle by creating spaces and experiences that bring neighbors together.
